Do you teach your children to believe in Santa?

If they ask me if he is real, we will say no, but we do take them to go see Santa and they get gifts from Santa, but we try not to make a big deal out of it, they are still little.

Yes it is part of the fun!

I still believe in Santa, and I'm an adult.

I think Santa is part of a fun story. And if you tell them the story of Santa from a young age and they believe in him it makes this time of year so much fun. When mine get old enough to ask if he is real, I will give them the same answer my mother always gave me, "if you believe, in him". It was never a yes/no answer. I still 'believe' in him to this day :)

I allowed them the privilege of believing. When they started asking questions, we dealt with them honestly - making sure they kept the "secret" to themselves. The same was true with the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy. I can't imagine not having had those experiences w/them. Personally I still believe!

We do not"do Santa". We tell our kids the story of St. Nick and that that is where the tradition of Santa Claus comes from. We tell them that some families choose to believe in Santa and some don't.We tell them that if their friends believe that it is ok to let them and not to tell them Santa is not real- that is up to their parents. We have Christmas morning surprises - they just aren't from Santa. We still have egg hunts and their will still be a surprise under their pillow when they loose teeth. They just won't come from fake people.

8:32, I agree 100% that's exactly what I wanted to write!!

My 2 year old loves sitting in Santa's lap bc he knows he's just pretend. Just bc we don't 'do' the Santa thing, doesn't mean we are Anti Santa! We just choose to go about it a different way. I'm glad I am honest with my kids and they know the true meaning of who St Nick was. It's a very good story and example of what we are supposed to be doing this time of year when it's easy to get carried away. I just refuse to make it more than that- a story.

I don't "teach" them he is real. If they ask I will tell them. We do make a list and leave cookies and milk for Santa and there are gifts from Santa but we don't go over how its true and he's real and he comes down the chimney etc etc.

I don't think we should think of Santa as a lie. It is fun to pretend. I do not know of anyone who resents their parents for letting them believe in Santa. I do, however, know a couple of people who wish their parents would have just let them pretend and enjoy the idea of Santa. They have stated that they feel like they missed out on the fun of believing. I have done the same thing as 7:36 and when my kids ask if he is real we say "if you believe in him." I know my oldest knows the truth, but I think sometimes he asks just to hear my answer. It always makes him smile.

By stating "I'm glad I am honest" you seem to be saying we that "do santa" are being dishonest? My kids know Santa at the mall is just a guy in a costume. We had to go over costumes in preparation for Disney World in order for them to not be scared. They do still believe there is a Santa though. They don't really question or get wrapped up into it. If they did, I would explain how it works. Santa is real because I am real. I am Santa! I eat the cookies, fill the stockings, and bring gifts. I can go over the story of why Santa came about. I think whichever way you do it is fine, but don't assume we are lying to our kids! When your 2 year old asks how a baby got in your tummy, do you say God put it there or do you tell them about the act you did? By leaving that part out, you aren't lying.

I knew the ones who "Do Santa" would attack those of us who "don't" :)

By writing a letter and leaving cookies YOU ARE teeling your kids Santa is real!!

What about "every good and perfect gift comes form above"???

To those of you who don't "do" Santa, I have one request: If you're going to tell your kids the truth about Santa, please do not let them believe that Spiderman is real.

I have a friend who feels bad lying to her son about Santa but the boy believes with all his heart that Spiderman is real and they think it's hilarious. I think that's dumb.

Other than that, I don't think it's really my place to say how you should celebrate.

Incidentally, at our house, if you don't believe in Santa, he doesn't leave you any presents. :)

I think we live in a world that has harsh enough realities and kids grow up too fast already. We do Santa and our little one loves it. This is the first year she really gets it and it's amazing to see that part of Christmas through her eyes. Santa is innocent make-believe that doesn't hurt anyone.

That said - I don't care if other people want to tell their kids about Santa or not. I just want my child to have the same experiences I had about Christmas and they are entitled to do the same.

I blame Obama for all of you who do not believe! Lighten Up and have a little fun. I also agree with 9:43. Isn't it just as much of a lie to say God put a baby in your tummy. Kids don't have to know the truth about everything. How horrible their little world would be if they knew what we know. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Love,
Santa ;)

8:44 here and I didn't say 'honest' in a judgemental demeaner! I said I am glad that I am honest with them, you have a better way of saying it?!? I'm not saying I am 100% honest with them ALL the time. We use 'child friendly' terms for parts and how babies are made (in simple terms). My children know that spiderman isn't real, etc.

It's funny how many different ways we parent and still, a good 85% (just a guess) of our kids will turn out to be good people and not ever cause any great harm to anyone! I doubt anyone goes out killing people bc his parents taught or didn't teach Santa!

Do what you want, just make sure it doesn't go too far. I ONLY worry about it bc a friend of mine, who is now 26, still HONESTLY believes in Santa and ALL Disney characters, but bc she Can't see GOD, doesn't believe in him!!

Funny thing too, we don't teach Santa, but my gpa is a Santa! He looks identical to him and works at the mall as a Santa. Pretty funny when ALL things come out, just goes to show how little we know of eachother, but how quick we are to jump to conclussions. =)

10:28- I'm the one above you and I'm not attacking at all. I said either way is fine. I just don't want you to assume we are lying to our kids. They are writing a letter and leaving cookies for me! I am real. I think my oldest will figure out this year or by next year and I'm positive she isn't going to be mad I was santa. It's fun. And no, my kids know cartoons are not real! I believed in Santa and remember the day exactly that I asked if he was real or not. I was in 1st grade and was not upset my parents were Santa at all. That's all I was saying. There is no right or wrong here I don't believe.

To those that believe/let kids believe:

What do you do if/when the nonSanta believing kids tell them Santa is not real? Does that make you angry, do you try to tell them there still is or explain the truth?

I'm just wondering bc we don't believe and our children are very polite and don't tell others just in case. But, there is a rude little boy that went around telling everyone in school that Santa isn't real and it made a lot of moms ticked! They had a meeting with his parents and everything! I was appauled!!

Haha. 8:30- I wouldn't get mad at all. Well, by school do you mean grade school? If it happened and they were 5 or older, I wouldn't care at all. I would tell her. I would then tell her not to tell people that though because it's fun to believe. If it's a day school and they are 2 or 3 I may just change the subject. Very easy to do at that age! I may let him parents know kindly but I wouldn't get all angry and make a huge deal out of it.

I meant to say 8:30 here again...instead I made it look like I'm commenting on myself.

We believe. But we use the real words for body parts. That's the only comment I have for today. Do what works for your family. Make the holidays a wonderful time.
