Should child predators be forced to wear signs identifying themselves ?

No.

And I've never heard this issue addressed? Is someone thinking of making this happen or something?

One thing to remember: not all registered sex offenders are pedophiles. Some were just 19 year old boys who's girlfriend lied to them about their age - they had consensual sex - parents of the girl later found out and filed statutory rape charges. No, don't get me wrong, that is bad, but it's not the same as a pedophile!

Absolutely not.

Should murderers be forced to wear something, car jackers, arsonists???

I don't think so. It would only cause panic to parents who saw them and it wouldn't be safe for the people wearing them.

Yes- I definately think there should be a drastic action taken to identify those who have and are still seeking to harm our little ones (I am not talking about the minority of sex offenders who slept w/ their girlfriend). The success rate in rehabilitating this type of criminal would better be described as a failure rate-the stats are scary. These people are released and strike again.
These people live to hide in the open, go unnoticed, and strike the most naive, innocent, trusting sector of our population. There is a way to separate the proven criminals who have harmed and countinue to seek opportunities to harm our little ones- if a sign or mark can ve one child then let's do it.
I don't give a crap about their rights! Their rights flew out the window when they hurt a child! And have every desire to continue hurting children.
I care about my child making it to adulthood unbroken.
Can you really compare a child rapist to a car jacker --
They should wear a sign and it should say "I like to hurt children".

anyone read the Scarlett letter? I like the idea...not to identify the sinner but those that won't associate themselves with them...I think it would be interesting.

No. How would you enforce that?

Steps have been taken to put the power in the hands of parents... you can search for registered sex offenders in your area, see what they were found guilty of, and how close they live to you. I go to my state government's website and do the search about every six months.

And even though there aren't any registered sex offenders in my development, my kids do not play at our park down the street nor outside by themselves.

I do think that we cannot be too vigilant with our children. But I also think that forcing someone to wear a sign would be problematic.

Castration? I am all for that depending on the charges.

What about the registered offenders that are innocent? There are a lot more than you think.

It's the easiest crime to be convicted of while innocent.

I have worked with abused children in the Oklahoma area.

Should a child who was sexually abused for years and years......

Then is removed and put in foster care...

The molests his foster sibling as a result of his years of abuse......and becomes a registered sex offender (yes teens become registed sex offenders)

Be required to wear a sign for the rest of his life?

I think this would cause more probs that good.

9:15 am - I have to agree with you on that! There are a number of sex offenders who are innocent.

I made up a story to my child once that we had gone on a train ride and there was a giraffe on it. I asked him if he remember it and he said yes, then he went into great details describing the trip, the giraffe, etc. The way he talked about it, it was like it really happened.

So I do agree that there are alot of falsely accused and convicted sex offenders out there... of course there's alot that aren't too!

No, that would be a slippery slot to go down. If we started off labeling pedophiles, how long would it be before we were labeling others.

No, besides you should be more worried about the unregistered sex offenders as opposed to the registerd ones.

Comparisons aside between different kinds of crimes --

I don't think any of us would want to have the worst part about us hung about our necks so that others would know how to treat us. Besides, how would you check? "Excuse me, you look creepy, where's your sign?" What, law enforcement is going to hold these people's hands everywhere they go?

No, requiring this of our criminals is just a small step shy of requiring this of the innocent, too. Such as what Hitler did in the 30's and 40's. This is not about rights. It's about how we treat our criminals. Our treatment of the guilty says a lot about the kind of society we have. I think we've done enough.

That would not be Christian like at all to do this. How do we know they didn't screw up but recieved psych treatment and are living the way they should? Parents should be more worried about having an open relationship with their child, inform them of dangers, don't be naive, and let them know they can always tell you anything and everything.

We unfortunately can't keep our children or ourselves from ever being hurt but we can help them process through hurt.

Most sex offenders were sexually abused themselves. If only they had a loving support group where they felt they could share what happened to them, get counseling for, and find healing...there would be less preditors.

No - Absolutely not!

I don't really even think it would help that much. I think the biggest threat to our kids are those that haven't been caught yet.
